CRANIOSACRAL TECHNIQUE

At two months, your baby’s arms and legs are beginning to straighten and at three months she can stretch out her limbs more easily. If your baby is very fractious and has had a difficult delivery, long labor, or needed forceps or ventouse, you will be able to help her relax through her neck and shoulders. Unlike the toe-to-top full-body massage, this routine begins at the head (cranium) and moves down through the back (and to the sacrum). This is because the emphasis here is on physical alignment of the head and neck and relaxation of the neck and shoulders. Relieving pain and tension in this area will help your baby be far less fractious. The neck is another emotional area and many things can be a “pain in the neck”; a long, difficult labor is certainly one of these as far as your baby is concerned.

You need to choose the right moment for this technique—the best time may be just after the full massage routine, when your baby is completely relaxed and happy, or after your baby has had her bath—when she is at her least active. You also will need your partner or a friend to perform the entire technique.
